Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a controversial video.

The Recording That Provoked the Dispute

The video footage, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly served in defense or intelligence roles.

"Similar to us, you all took an oath to safeguard and support this founding document," the representatives declared in the brief video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from within our own country. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."

The Former President's Furious Reply

The recorded statement seemed to trigger a furious reply from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he declared: "This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader published a unified statement denouncing the remarks.

"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they wrote. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our nation with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against congressional representatives, and call on GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."

The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the safety of these officials and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical social media posts and retract his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the announcement added.

Lawmakers' Defiant Answer

The representatives who appeared in the video also issued a statement.

"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who care for this country and took an oath to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that important obligation."

"What's most telling is that the president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "All citizens must unite and denounce the president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."

Additional Political Comments

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of government members."

He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this without delay and without qualification."

The GOP leader supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in US history."

The Republican leader also according to sources informed media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to examine the wording and establish all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Absolutely not."

"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the official said. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to members of the US military, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the president's proper directives."

She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
