Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Jail Diary Detailing Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a book this autumn named Notes from a Cell, which recounts the period endured in jail.

The revelation emerged just 11 days after Sarkozy was released while he contests his conviction on charges of criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to obtain presidential race money linked to the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he writes in a preview, implying the account is more about his musings from solitary confinement rather than a broader observation on the strained and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where one hears endless commotion,” he continues. “The racket unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection grows stronger behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Describing the Ordeal

At his release request hearing, Sarkozy had appeared by video link from a room in prison, depicting prison life as draining. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this difficult experience tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It leaves a mark every inmate due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

The former president, the ex-head of state between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural former head from the EU and the first postwar leader from France to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he had said he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Reading Material

It is not certain whether he had time to go through the three books he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the famous story, a plot where a blameless person ends up incarcerated then breaks out to seek vengeance.

Life in Confinement

The former leader was held in isolation for his own security in a space approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in the city. Security personnel stayed in a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated his diet consisted just yogurt during his stay because he feared prison cuisine could have been tampered with. Although he had access to prepare his own meals but refused this, according to reports. It is uncertain if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.

Legal Perspective

His attorney, who visited his client every day while he was in prison, told the release hearing he would be safer out of prison rather than in custody. “He received menacing messages, heard shouts after dark and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison in late October following a Paris court gave him a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to obtain political donations for his presidential bid.

He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial planned for next spring.
