Plans for Putin-Trump Summit Shelved Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to meet Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has declared.

Recently Trump stated he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest in the coming fortnight to address the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was not "needed".

The administration withheld additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting the president had pushed him to give up significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on Monday the American president supported a truce plan backed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Lavrov commented on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the war required resolution, Lavrov stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky said conversations concerning the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unscheduled call with Trump recently preceded reports that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he remarked.
