Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison
He contested justice and justice prevailed.
Two months subsequent to receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democratic institutions, former president Jair Bolsonaro now looks jail-bound.
Expected Incarceration
The adjudicated coup-monger – who had been living under house arrest in his mansion while a set of court processes and petitions proceed – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the coming days, during growing rumors that he will be sent to a notorious top-security penitentiary.
Previous Statements on Convicts
Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the far-right ex- soldier exhibited minimal sympathy for the country's inmates.
“For what reason must we give those dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up behind bars, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”
Incarceration Destination Speculation
However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an seeming attempt to discourage the judiciary from banishing him there.
Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, claimed he predicted the 70-year-old figure to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal problems – the consequence of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 presidential campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His condition is highly critical. He will not be able to manage if they move him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” said the senator, who also worried about cramped cells and the condition of jail cuisine.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells containing four dozen prisoners: “It's virtually one meter squared per inmate.
“We talked to the prisoners and they protest, of course, of the awful meals,” remarked the senator.
Allies Voice Concerns
Lucas is not the only voice speaking out ahead of the former president’s anticipated incarceration.
Authoring in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the greatest political injustice in its record”.
“This is an wrong that gnaws the souls of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.
Mixed General Opinion
This could be accurate due to the significant support Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. However his expected imprisonment has also pleased the hearts of millions other people who feel he deserves to be incarcerated for conspiring to stop the elected leader from assuming office – and even plotting to have him murdered.
The lawmaker, a representative for the incumbent president's allied group, said: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wants Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. No one desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to obtain proper care – but proper treatment in prison. He can’t continue being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years applauding the tough conditions of inmates, had unexpectedly woken up to their rights. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly argued that basic rights are not for offenders – decided to tour a jail to find out what conditions are really like,” he remarked.
“He is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, degrading treatment”.
Potential Incarceration Environment
Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently houses about fourteen thousand detainees, his probable assigned facility looks to be a close jail for officers and other “unique” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).
Its cells are far more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the impressive presidential palace, approximately 12 miles away.
As per information, the cell Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – about the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and contains a 130 square foot bathroom with a shower and a 130 square foot terrace. “He could be permitted to have a set and even a small fridge in his cell as long as they were donated by his family,” sources suggested.
Political Responses
He criticized the rumoured proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his outcome in the {
