Reece Walsh Shines as Dominant The Kangaroos Defeat England Aside in First Ashes Match
England's attacking frailties were laid bare and capitalized on by a clinical Australia as the visitors swept to a worryingly straightforward win in the first match of the Ashes.
The England coach's team had talked at length about their drive going into the opening series for 22 years, and they were definitely full of endeavour at the famous stadium. However, in the key instances, it was the reigning title holders who showed more calmness in front of a record attendance for an series match in the UK of over sixty thousand spectators.
Outstanding Performance from Reece Walsh
Guided by an exceptional display in offense and defense from Brisbane Broncos’ Walsh, the Kangaroos were worthy and comfortable winners in the first match of the three-match series, meaning England must win at Goodison Park next Saturday to keep alive their aspirations of a first Ashes win since 1970.
England will have to be significantly improved with the possession if they are to achieve that. On multiple occasions in the opening period, the hosts found themselves in advantageous situations but they were failed to score for any points. That was in no small part thanks to Walsh, who pulled off two wonderful interceptions.
Key Moments of the Game
The first came as Herbie Farnworth seemed certain to put Dom Young in for what would have been the opening try, then the fullback denied Lewis as the break neared. By then, the Kangaroos had taken the lead as Reece Walsh himself completed a excellent play.
Cleary added the extras before kicking a two-pointer on the stroke of half-time to establish a two-score advantage. It was a pivotal point, as was the try for Angus Crichton soon after the restart which made it fourteen to nil in favour of the visitors. England now had to cross the line thrice and that seemed to halt their momentum.
Should there have been uncertainty about the winners, they were firmly put to bed with a quarter-hour to go. Cameron Munster’s line break was supported by Crichton, who broke through Jack Welsby for Australia’s third try.
That made it 20-0 and there was further humiliation in the final minutes as Walsh finished another scintillating move, exploiting a tired and visibly shot England defense for his second try.

By then, home fans had begun to leave early and many did not see Clark's consolation, which at least avoided England being held to nil. However, there are many issues for the coach to address going into what is now a must-win Test next Saturday.
