Biding two decades for another chance to secure a coveted business acquisition is a privilege not available to most business leaders. The Harmsworth dynasty, though, takes a more patient stance to time.

While most business boards create short-term strategies, the family, having compiled a formidable media empire over over one hundred years, are accustomed to thinking in terms of decades.

A Long-Awaited Bid

It was in the summer of 2004 that Jonathan Harold Esmond Vere Harmsworth, the tall, curly haired proprietor of the Daily Mail, was unsuccessful in his bid to purchase the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.

In his view, the setback pleased Rupert Murdoch because it would have created a stable of conservative newspapers powerful enough to rival the “distinct political influence” of Murdoch’s own titles.

The reserved Rothermere, however, was able to adopt a patient strategy. The Telegraph titles were once again offered for sale in 2023. Since then, two prospective owners have come and gone, both after internal Telegraph revolts over their suitability. Rothermere has now made his move.
