The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... Currently.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit program reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Fan Response

It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.

“We have some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
