The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
