Two Separate Cuba-Destined Aid Vessels Listed Lost following Departing Mexican Waters.
A extensive rescue and recovery operation is presently ongoing in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing sailboats carrying relief goods journeying from Mexico to Havana.
Military Search and Rescue Missions Deployed
Mexico has sent naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were transporting at least nine crew members, per a navy statement.
The vessels had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, authorities reported.
The Situation of Relief to the Island
Cuba has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation struggles through widespread power outages across the country.
"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable safety systems and signalling equipment," a spokesperson associated with the mission stated.
The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.
Previous Aid Shipment
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the country.
That boat, called "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, carried photovoltaic panels, drugs, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.
Broader Geopolitical Climate
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the island nation began.
The United Nations have since warned of "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than 50k surgeries called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from different leaders emphasizing the complicated nature of diplomatic ties.
Responding to certain proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of discussions commenced, although their current progress remains unclear.
The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its disposal to discover the sailboats and guarantee the security of the sailors.
To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
