UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
